I am researching TVs, and I had thought that I knew that DLPs do NOT use lamps, but I am seeing here that they do. What's up? Do they or don't they?

  1. DLP sets are typically projection, so they do require a projection lamp.

LCD sets can be direct view or projection, but both require a light: direct view requires a back light while an LCD projector requires a lamp.  In the case of an LCD backlight, it can either be a CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent light) or LED-based.

CRT sets illuminate when a cathode beam strikes and fluoresces the phosphors on the screen.

Plasma and OLED technologies are self-illuminating.
