I thought the Olympics was supposed to use sport to transcend politics?

Isn't there some moto or creed that the olympics is supposed to be about sport and is supposed to bring people together and transcend the differences of politics?

  1. that is the goal. Unfortunately many people can not separate politics from the Olympics.

    Their desire to win is more important than anything.  


  2. It sounds like you already know the answer, but from the Olympic Charter:

    "The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to

    building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practised in accordance with Olympism and its values."

    I was in high school and college during the boycott years of 1980 and 1984... and still do not understand how that decision came to result in any positive affect.  Politics need to stay out of the Olympics and participating nations need to abide by the Olympic Charter.

    P.S. The motto is "Citius, Altius, Fortius" (faster, higher, stronger).  The creed is "The most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the fight ; the essential thing is not to have won, but to have fought well."

    I would say that some people miss out on striving for the best, both in themselves and in others. :)
