In January my 3 year old mare ran off with me for a quarter of a mile and through the barn. When I fell off I fell hard and sprained my wrist very bad. I need to start cantering again because I am a barrel racer and I will start racing next month. What can I do to boost my trust in my horse and going fast again?

  1. Build yourself up slowly - don't just assume you should get straight back into cantering again.

Why not have a few lessons on a reliable older horse first just to get you back up to speed before riding your own mare.

I'm a little concerned that you say she is only 3 - she should not be in heavy work like barrel racing at this age.  She should still be learning her basics!  Perhaps this is the reason why whe bolted with you - she may not understand what you want.  Don't forget that most horses (thoroughbreds aside) are not physically capable of hard work until they are 4/5 years of age.

  2. Im a jockey by trade in Australia,Ive had heaps of falls, and broken a few bones,I just take it easy for a while untill you get enough strength in your wrist and go from there.(good luck)

  3. Just ride but donot go to fast

  4. I use to do track work for years I would ride anything untill I had all these silly babys bucking all the time I got skired then a horse broke a bone as I was doing a gallop I stoped riding and it took me a long time to get back on but now I am glad I did I did it on my own with no one to judge me and just started walking Iand got trust in that horse and mover on from there some time seeing some one els ride it puts your mind at ease.
