  1. I think you have described the starter soleniod(its not a relay) the battery negative(or ground) does not connect to the solenoid. on that engine it goes to a stud on the exhaust port cover plate. NO voltage or positive goes to the coils either. the large red plug that comes apart has all of the ignition and control wireing in it. If you sent voltage thru the system you may have damaged the power pack(its internal ground may be shorted) check the pins and sockets in the big red plug to make sure that they are not bent and or mis-aligned. also near the solenoid(on the engine harness) there is a small ground wire this hooks up to one of the solenoid mounting screws and must contact the engine block. the star washer should be between the block and the ground terminal. check this stuff out and ask back or contact me thru answers and I can help you diagnose it further

  2. the engine turns off by groudning out, there sgould be a black wire with a yelow stripe, make sureit is connected thats your kill wire, also you coud have some current bleeding into your ground that will do it also...when i see this problem usualy the wireing harness is bad

  3. sevenout is correct look for a broken wire in the area of the motor, you should be able to feel where it is broken.
