  1. AHA! Mystery of the Peonies. There is a little secret to peony blooms. Yes, they need adequate sun, as others here have pointed out, but there is another thing that really matters and it is possible that this is the problem. The thing we need to know is, do you get buds that fail to open or simply no buds at all? If you get buds that fail to open, the most common reason for this is that the ants are not allowed to do their job. Peony buds produce a nectar that ants must eat in order for the flower to bloom. Sometimes people react to seeing ants in the garden by poisoning them with an insect killer. Think back to your insecticide habits of the last couple of years and consider whether this might be a factor. If not, I concur with the others here that lack of sun is a likely culprit, although I have peonies in only 3-4 hours of sun and they do fine (although not as well as the ones in the sun all day).

  2. it could be just that they're not quite ready, since the transplant... or if they are planted too deep they won't bloom either... check that they are no more than an inch or two below the surface and don't have mulch or leaves over them.... and yes, full sun is key!!...

  3. If doesn't get enough sun it won't bloom. I had one that didn't bloom, we had an ice storm and lost some branches, the peony bloomed this year and so did the irises that never bloomed before.

  4. I moved a peony 2 years ago and while it didn't bloom last year it did bloom the this year.  When planting peonies make sure the area gets at least 6 hours of sun per day.  Peonies like a feeding of a balanced fertilizer when growth starts in the spring and at planting time.  Bonemeal is a good choice.  Here's one thing that's extremely important when planting peonies--make sure the eyes are no more than one or two inches below the surface of the soil.  Any deeper than that and they definitely will never bloom.

  5. They also love acidic soil.  Have your soil tested.  Iris' will not generally bloom for two years after fresh planting or transplanting, you will just get alot of greens.

  6. Peonies do not always bloom right away.  You should add a little compost to the soil around this plant - make sure it has lots of sunlight and water well.  Probably it will bloom next year.

Make sure it is not planted too close to a big tree or a bush  - these arbustes can be taking the nutrients from the soil around the peony  and that will inhibit its blooms.

    Good Luck!

  7. Minimum 8 hours of sun per day?
