  1. Right-click on

    My Computer>Properties>Device Manager

Locate your DVD Drive, right click it, and select "uninstall".

Reset your computer, and this time let Window's automatically install the driver.

  2. Uninstalling the device using the Device Manager won't help you unfortunately as that just removes and reinstalls the drivers in Windows. It won't touch the firmware. Likewise, system restore will also do nothing.

If you can reflash the DVD drive with good firmware, you should be OK. (There is a slim chance the firmware update you did will make future updates fail, but you won't know until you try it.) You might also just try reflashing the firmware from the same place you started with. Sometimes the updates just fail to write correctly.

You may be able to go the the web site for the drive's manufacturer and get a firmware revision from them. Don't be surprised if their update requires you to make a boot floppy or CD. That's pretty typical.

What is the brand and model of the DVD drive?
