    4.Choose the notepad icon

  2. Click on properties>change icon

  4. rename the folder

    "folder name here.txt"

    that should work

  5. You can't with the Windows default icons, you would need to locate third party icons, which you can purchase from a legitimate vendor, or take your chances with downloading malware from a free offering. There are many different icons stores, one of which you join, and then there is some sort of system of trading that takes place, and thousands belong to it. I will see if I have it stashed in my Bookmarks:

    Well, I am not sure if that is what I was looking for, but this page has free offerings, plus, there are plenty of offerings to choose from which you can pay for. All of these are royalty free, so you can use them without paying a subscription. Once you buy the cost based ones the are yours to use as long as you please. Please read the TOS or Terms of Service, and any other pertinent information before using the icons.

    You see, the Windows Notepad icon is used only with the Notepad extension, .txt. On top of that, only a few Windows icons are allowed for use with Folders. You can customize many files, but when you mess with the folders you can take functionality from each format. For example, when you choose the folder option for music, you get the folder adorned with up to four CD album art covers if you have multiple albums in one folder. For folders which contain one album, Windows adorns that folder with the art for that particular album, if it can find it.

    Anyway, to see the default icon options right click on the folder, select Properties, click the Customize tab, then at the bottom click Change Icon. A small window will open with the current icons you can choose from. The closest you can get to the Notepad look is a Clipboard with a piece of paper on it. Would that suffice?

    However, you can only change the top icon, not any subfolder icons, unless you change each one individually. You can apply a folder template and apply that template to all subfolders, but that is different than changing the icon. Additionally, when you alter the default folder icon you will no longer be able to see a preview of what is inside the folder if you use Vista.

    I seldom change my system default icons. I do use icons for when I program some cute little item, such as a small RSS reader application or a stock ticker, or some such stuff. I am only now learning how to write in visual basic and I finally learned why it is considered a foreign language in college. lol

    Anyway, good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for.

    btw, if you don't like how something looks when you finish, go back into the Properties, Customize, click the Change Icon again, and when the icon window opens click the Defaults button. This action will reset the folder to its original icon.

    Edit: Adding an extension to a folder will not alter its appearance, that only works with actual files. For example, if you wanted to open a Microsoft Word document always in Notepad, change its extension from either .doc or .docx depending on the version, '03 or '07. An easier way of changing an extension is to open Set Default programs, click on the application, then select the items you want that program to handle as default. However, this changes all files to that extension, not just a single file. Just change the extension for a single file if you want it to open permanently in a particular program but not all files from the other application. This is off topic however. I only added it because I read a post instructing you to simply add the .txt extension to the folder. It doesn't work.

  6. Try this

    folder->properties->customize->change icon->browse

    have fun

    regards.....
