  1. the software you are using just now is well recommended but i had problems with avg slowing the comp down on version 8 so moved to free avast antivirus instead but if you are having no problems with avg then i would leave it

i suggest you gert a free firewall such as comodo http://cid-47f44a45c1c7c119.skydrive.liv...

also download microsoft windows defender http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai... and spywareblaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareb... for extra protection

  2. You've got a good security set-up there. The rules are that you have 1 firewall, 1 antivirus, at least 1 anti-spyware. If you ask any PC security expert about free applications they would recommend the ones you have. Spyware Blaster is useful too.

If you are running the Windows firewall, I'd recommend dumping it for either Zone Alarm Free or Comodo. They are much better firewalls.

If you want ZoneAlarm Security Suite email me and I'll explain how. Other than that you look safe to me.

  3. AVG is trying to be more than what it initially started out to be>and that was virus protection only.  Now it is trying to cover spyware and adware as well.  Which means something will suffer.  It never had a compatibility issue in the early days.   Because of compatibility problems, it is off my radar.

I use a different antivirus protection called AntiVir (which found stuff AVG sat on),  I have SpybotS&D which I run every once in awhile to check my computer over.  Also go to http://www.ad-aware.com and download the free version, let it update itself and let it scan you machine too.  There is alot of c**p in there if you are on the net alot.    And c**p cleaner works ok.  There is no real conflict amongst the group.   Just beware that you have to active them to have them work.  There is nothing automatic about them(in the free versions)  Good enough for me.

As so long as you keep them updated, you will be on top of most of the problems to possibly plague you.

Free antivirus programs are fine.  None of those anti virus programs make programs for viruses that do not exist yet.  How can you?

  4. Those free virus scanners will not prevent the virus from downloading in the first place

They're free for a reason--they're not total protection

  5. That's totally fine, but please uninstall either Spy Bot Search & Destroy or AVG Free Edition.

I'd recommend you uninstall either one of them, most likely Spy Bot. They can eat each other out, meaning both of them together won't work. You only need one to keep secure, having two won't make it any better.
