If you are talking about Southern California(Los Angeles) There was a place called "The Pike" located in Long Beach.  It was open until 1979.  It was basically abandoned until the late 90's-Early 00's

In 2003 the area was redeveloped and now includes Shops & Resturants, Ferris Wheel, Carosel as well as the Aquarium of the Pacific and Long Beach Convention Center.
