  1. The major difference between hitting outside and middle is the approach.  For middle hitting, you take straight approach as the set goes up almost straight.  However, outside hitters take angled approach as the sets are coming in an arch, which is hard to hit with an straight approach.  Basically, starting from behind the 10' line, you should go out past the sideline and come back in toward the hitting spot in an diagonal path to meet the ball.  This way you're trying to hit a ball that's coming toward you.  But if you take straight approach, you would be trying to hit the ball that's passing by.

See if you're making the right approach from outside.

  2. Funny thing is that I used to be a middle and now hit outside. I'm extremely small for a middle (5'9") but I was quick. Transitioning to the outside is completely different. On hitting from the outside, I guess is a lot harder because you don't necessarily have as much room or options to hit around.

My advice to you would be reach higher and just snap. Remember not to go too early on the approach or you'll be swinging from behind your head, which is terrible for your shoulders. Also, try and see the court. I'm not really the power hitter who hits 10 foot line every time. I try to look at my options and play the ball smart, whether it's a tip in the middle or a swing down line. Try to look at all your options when playing which will help improve your game a ton since you'll be unpredictable when it comes to finding those holes.
