I visited Calabria, beautiful - is it true there's a lot of mafia there?

I went on an amazing trip to Italy last year and loved it. My husband's family is originally from Calabria and we stayed there for 2 weeks during our trip with some of his family. It was beautiful, relaxing. Nice scenery and beautiful mountains.

I have heard recently several people saying that the mafia is a problem in Calabria. When we were driving there were occasional police blocks on the road, but I'm not sure what this was for.

Is it true that there is a problem with the mafia in Calabria? Do we have to be careful or worried the next time we visit?

  1. Unfortunately yes.But if you're not  abusinessman or if you don't have a shop you don't have to be afraid.


  2. Like everywhere in the world, there are crime organizations and there are some places/regions where the problem is bigger compared to rest of the same Country.

    As said by another user, the mafia in Calabria is called "'ndrangheta", and is a different organization than Mafia (it's like calling "Japanese Mafia" the Yakuza; "mafia" actually became a synonym of "organized crime").

    But of course the key is "compared to..."?

  3. yes...mafia is in calabria...sicilia e campania...and is a big problem...but italian people are triyng to fight mafia boss because italia is a beautifoul cauntry but is ill...i don't know if you have understand me because i'm italian and i'm not very well in english...
