This is what i want in my bike:

-Lightweight Men's Hardtail

-Front&Rear disc brakes

-I would like it to be from a bigger company (better support)

-Less than $350. This is somewhat flexible.

The bike i was looking at was the Specialized HRXC Disc. The only problem with that is the price ($420). I might be able to get a discount if I go to a shop. But based on this what would you recommend?

Thanks

  1. You are right to go for a decent make. Have a look at the ranges of Trek, Gary Fisher, Kona, and Marin too.

You're definitely right to buy from a proper bike shop. They will not be very willing to negotiate on price of bike, but will likely agree to throw in some clothing or accessories to clinch the sale. They lose less by giving you $30 worth of kit, than by giving you $30 off the bike.

What currency are you quoting? I live in the UK, and the closest bike match to the HRXC is the Hardrock Comp disc, priced around £349 (GBP) if you can find a similar bike for $420 US dollars, then you are surely onto a winner. Good luck.

  2. Go look at Gary Fisher they make the best hardtail bikes out of any company in the industry it will be well worth your money. I would take a look at the tarpon and also the advanced, which are a little bit over your price range but worth the extra hundred or so.

  3. credit cards

  4. er... hate to tell you this but... impossible.

Either bump up the price, or lower your standards (by light, I'm guessing you mean sub-30 pounds?).

if your willing to bump up your budget, check out the Giant Yukon. Giant is a good company, especially for beginner bikers.
