I love fruits and I decided I wana start growing my own, problem is I dont know how. I need to know things like which fruits would be the least difficult to grow, where should I grow them, how much soil should there be if I'm not planting them in the ground, how much should I water them, and how long would it take them to grow? I've never really grown anything so I need all the help I can get! Thanks!

  1. My suggestion to you would be to find a nursery a real nursery not a hardware store with a garden center, and ask them. Pick their brains because they are the experts in your area. And don't be afraid to fail that's how we learn. Also there's a wealth of information available on-line, think of a fruit you might like to grow and google it.

  2. Melon is an excellent started fruit since it doesn't grow from a tree or bush and can be grown in one season. when you buy the seeds there should be planting instruction on the package. Berries are also fairly low maintainance you can buy bushes or starts for fairly low cost.  I have had great luck with blueberries in my area, but you should contact your local extension office for gardening help from a master gardener in your area.

  3. Fruits come in a wide variety of plant types and only some will be suitable for your climate.

Easiest and quickest to grow are annuals like cantaloupe and watermelon. They grow from seed and take up a lot of space.

Strawberries grow on small perennial plants that you should plant this year and have fruit next spring. You can get a lot of strawberries from a small space.

If you have patience, try raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. They grow on vines and bushes, and take a few years to start doing really well. They are all quite easy and can be grown along a wall or a fence.

Most tricky, and requiring the most patience are tree fruits such as apples, pears, peaches, cherries etc. They can take several years to bear fruit, and what you grow very much depends on your climate.

Try Stark Bros website for a lot of good information about fruit growing.
