  1. I have been a dental assistant for over 20 years. I learned on the job. There are schools that do offer courses, but I have heard mixed things about them. There are Associate Degrees programs and that would be preferred over a certificate only program,as a certificate is not a degree. It all depends on the requirements of your state. Some states require assistants to be certified or registered, some don't. If your state does not have such requirements, find a dentist who is willing to train you. Many will, but you can also take continuing education as you go along, as I have. Learn as much as you can, read everything you can and take advantage of educational opportunities whenever they come your way.I love dentistry and really enjoy my job.Good luck!

  2. find a school that offers training-

  3. you could start either at a community college where you could get your associate, or some ROP programs offer Dental assisting (Don't know if any other state does but CA does). or you could also go to schools such as Concorde Career College or UEI. The cheapest for you could be to invest some time and go around all the dental offices in your area, ask to speak with the office manager or the dentist him/herself about your interest in the dental field and a position as a sterilizer which is cleaning the operatories (rooms), instruments, etc. I went to Concorde and I love my job as a Dental Assistant and I am sure you will too, good luck.
