  1. To build a decent tower that would have power enough to make a long-range broadcast... you would most likely have to go through the FCC to get permission to even build. Not to mention the very large cost of building the tower.

Also, you can't just take-over the airwaves, that is illegal, and considering that the majority of radio stations across the country are owned by about three or four companies, they will bring you down big-time in court.

It would be best to just blast music from your house, or blast it out of your car and drive around your town.

  2. No one wants to hear your music!

  3. Ok you need a transmitter that is about same wattage as station or better as your station will not be heard... look at about $25-50k for a good used one if needing to be able to do 50-100kw ERP. (I found some that can probably do about 25kw ERP and that is pushing it hard on ebay for about $2,000 total)

You need a antenna and tower... no one who builds towers will build a tower without approval thru FAA over 200 feet (tower climbers are forced to report about them and the FAA will be notified by pilots as soon as it goes higher than about 300 feet when they have a close call).. antenna is a few thousand, hardline coax and connections to feed it (from transmiter to antenna) is about $10-$15k (I'm not researching specifics but figures are for about 500 feet not including the gas needed to make sure it doesn't fry the transmitter as before copper rush, hardline for a small stations was $4/foot with connectors at $150/piece )

Plus we aren't even talking tower costs.... Got about half a million to do it right as tower guys/engineer in charge, charge  about $100/hour and $3/foot to climb up or down per trip up or town said tower and they will be there for weeks pouring concrete, installing tower which goes for a few hundred a section plus all the guy cables and such?

You can get on another tower but tower people don't climb live towers and a one trip 500 feet is no less than $1k-$1.5k

and rent in the sticks is $1/per foot/per month   meaning $500/month at 500 feet plus other figures such as fuel surcharge etc etc.

So forget the Pump up the volume scenario

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pump_Up_the... (even though he did it with a low power station he built on a unused frequency supposedly)

  4. Dude you can pirate some airwaves on the lower section of the FM band. go to the library or online and read how. its easier than it looks. if you live in a city that would be a big plus. people will actually be in a reasonable distance to hear your music. Just don't go to radio shack, they wont know...unless you want to buy a cell phone.
