I wanna know about material and enrgy balance and effect for environment?

i know just a little about material balance but i want to know more and how i can apply it for environment management

The idea of material and energy balance is that we need a stable sytem where inputs equal outputs in the long-run.  So for every unit of maerial or energy we use from the environment, we need to replace it with one through other sources for a long-term balance.  The trouble is we are using more material and energy than we are generating right now so we are a net loser in these categories.  We can't do this forever.
