I wanna know how to turn pictures translucent.?

Im creating a Nokia 6131 theme at ownskin. I grab pictures from dafont for the menu icons. But ownskin says tat the picture must be translucent. So is there any software or somethin to convert the pictures to translucent? Besides Adobe Photoshop. Thx..
