  1. I do it! Not sure why either. A form of goodbye maybe. Or just that its safe for them to drive off! Maybe its just an Irish thing!!

  2. As long as you say 'Thank You' to the drive first, I can't see any great harm in tapping the car too - but then we all do odd things when we've had a drink.  As if the car is going to be grateful for you appreciating it having driven you home??

  3. I do it too, why?, I haven't got a clue.

  4. yep I do it !! its for several reasons but mainly to say thanks for the lift, the door is shut and im clear of the car . i suppose you  could also add a subconcious- and may you have a safe onward journey.

  5. you always see blokes whacking the top of the car when they get out if someone's given them a lift.

if it makes you happy, you tap away!

  6. i used to think it was just an Irish thing but i've seen it being done in American films etc. I do it myself but never stopped to think why. Maybe its a Déise thing!!  Thanks for making me think!!

  7. Yea i do that even when i'm not drunk!!

  8. I would rather be tapping a keg than tapping a car but to each their own.

  9. my brother does it and it really really annoys me

  10. I jump on the bonnet of the car and give the driver a bum flash before they leave. Not sure if its an Irish thing but its definatly a drunken thing!!!!

You may be an 'eejit' but we love you anyway!

  12. Maybe it is total cultural difference but I can't understand the question from Texas

  13. I do it as a signal to the driver that it's OK to drive off, but then I used to be a bus conductor, "Hold very tight please" Ting Ting!

  14. It's a courtesy tap. It lets the driver know your out of the car and a safe distance away so they can drive off. It's also saying "thank you".

  15. its an irish thing

  16. Ive only ever seen guys do that, and Ive wondered why they do it. I think its like giving a child a pat on the head when they've been good.

  29. I'Ve done it for years, its like a pat on the back gesture, a big thank you, but beware inside the car it's quite loud, and do make sure you dont(as your a female) tap your rings or bracelet on the roof as this is annoying, particularly if the persons fussy over the car.
