I live in california, Pismo Beach and im about 2 mins from the ocean and never tried to surf all this time :D I have a wet suite and my bro let me use his board while he is away, 6'4 Cole which he says is hard to get used too..

Im 6ft 185lbs, will I even have a chance on it, I rather try and learn then buy a long board or a thicker board to learn on.

  1. GO out with a friend who can show you the basics. A smaller board will be more difficult for your first time because it seems more complicated to learn to have to paddle, kick and manage the timing of the waves all at once. On a longboard, which is worth renting, however, it picks up with the wave more easily than a shortboard. Later, as you learn to paddle, when to stand up, and where waves break, try the short board.

  2. Nice area. I use to live in Grover Beach and I have family I visit often in both Nipomo and Arroyo Grande. I have 3 sons that surf, but unfortunately 2 live in LA and the 3rd lives here in the valley with me...or else I would see if they would give you some lessons. I suggest you just keep trying and maybe ask someone for some pointers. Strike up a convesation with someone whose out there with you. People like being asked such questions as it makes them feel good. Good luck with this. Be safe!

  3. You have 2 options. Hit up your local surf shop for a lesson or two OR do it yourself.

That site currently has a podcast series called Learn to Surf. It's hosted by 2 professional surfers and covers the basics. The video and instructions are brief but most of surfing is just practice anyway.
