  1. Don't use an up and down tier system.  My brother for his wedding cake had three tiers, but, they were spread out as so it didn't waste cake.  When the cake was all done, it looked like thee steps.  The decorator, used a 1" pole for the bottom, then 3 for the middle and 5 for top.  There were flowers, that matched the wedding scheme all around as to not show all the tiers.  Also make your cakes in smaller cake molds.

  2. No guest wants to bring home cake from a wedding.  The false tiers are a good idea, or you can donate an extra tier or two, whatever's left, to a shelter.  Its a really nice thing to do on a day that will make you so happy to make others happy as well.

  3. Have your thought of using fake tiers?

If you want a big cake but you only have 150 people you could use fake tiers (usually made of Styrofoam). They are decorated with icing, so they look like the rest of the cake but it cuts down on cost and eliminates the extras.

    Good luck!

  4. Get the cake that you want and just aske the Baker what can you do to save any cake if there is extra..............But everything is your choice

  5. bigger pieces for everyone or have the one or two other tier be decorated styrofoam.  Ask the baker of your choice and they would pick which one to accomodate your guest count.

  6. Don't think that you will have too much because the top tier always goes home with you uncut so that  you can freeze it and eat it on your 1st anniversary.  That leaves you with 3 tiers to serve with.  If you do have leftovers give big pieces to the members of your wedding party to take home.

  7. just buy the big cake u want and give out big pieces to each person and wen the guests r leaving give each one a piece to go. it will b like u hav 300 ppl instead of 150 cuz u'll b giving them double the cake :) hope it helped

  8. Do you have any talented friends that could make your cake??  Other than that, I don't think that is enough for most bakeries.  You could check at your local supermarket or Costco/Sam's Club.  They might have a cake in your budget that will make you happy.

  9. Let the people at the wedding take some of the cake home with them. You may want to give them bigger pieces. Get only 3 tiers.

  10. you can have the top 2 tiers faux cake, Styrofoam but iced and the bottom 2 will be cake where you and your hubby will cut into it and then sliced up for the rest of reception.  You can actually get beautiful wedding cakes done at Wal-Mart bakeries-Check out their bakery next time your in-they (obviously depending on the decorator) do beautiful work.

  11. We are having 4 tiers as well with only about 130 people. So the baker told us that they can still do that with having the last tier as Styrofoam and frosting it so no one would ever know. Just remember not to cut into that tier as you cut the cake together.

  12. I just went to a wedding and they had someone wrap up pieces of the cake in plastic wrap and when everyone left the handed it to them as they were walking out the door! It was a great snack after drinking all night! We partied so hard we didn't even have a piece during the wedding! Too busy DANCING!!

  13. How about you have fake tiers. If you talk to your caterer, they would know exactly what I'm talking about. Usually the first two tiers are real cake and the other (top tiers) are iced and decorated like they are real tiers but they are really just fillers. I think it's Styrofoam covered in foil, that's iced like the rest of the cake.

  14. Columns could be an alternative to make the cake appear taller/bigger.

150 ppl it's a big cake. Professional bakers make the slices HUGE so the cake will appear taller. Supermarket cakes are not tall, only professional bakers will offer you this.

IF DYI, this company sells professional baking supplies, to include stands, colums, fountains and all sort of stuff.

    Goo dluck and congratulations

  15. That is going to cost sooo much money and you will have leftovers.  If you are going to have caterers, you could offer them some to take home.  You guests can take some, as well.  Another option is considering a smaller cake.  I'm not sure, but I think you could have them make faux layers...you'll have the look but not the waste.  Good luck

  16. you can do 4 tiers and just have them make each smaller around to get the right amount.  I am only having 60 people and I'm having 3 tiers!

Also you can put each tier on a pedistal instead of stacking it directly on the last tier to space it out a bit and give it a bigger look

  17. From what I heard brides traditionally save the first tier, some have frozen it for years (apparently it last long). You can give away another tier or two to someone your close to or to someone that cant stop talking about how good it is or bring a tier to work leaving it in the lunchroom for whomever to enjoy and then use the last during your reception.

  18. well with the weddings ive gone to people would freeze the grooms cake or part of their wedding cake so they could eat it when they get back from their honey moon. when its thawed out it taste just as good as your wedding day

  19. go to your local supermarket and see what they can do for your budget... you can also do a really pretty display of cupcakes on a multi-tiered display to give the illusion of a large cake... it can be done... check out ideas on the knot.com ... you can do it! I suggest having a pretty topper (mini cake) done at your local super market or sams club/bj's/costco store and then arrange a bunch of really pretty cupcakes around it... it looks elegant... i'm a wedding photographer and have seen many things done... this is my favorite and is really trendy now!!!

  20. They can make faux layers out of styrofoam. They're sold at cake decorating shops or online or if you are having your cake professionally made, tell the baker you want a fake layer or two. My cake was 5 tiers -- The bottom layer and 2nd layer were real. The 3rd and 4th layers were fake. Then the top layer was real, the one we saved.

They decorate them just like they do the other layers, so no one can even tell they are fake.

  21. have them make the tiers more narrow so it looks like a big cake but it really isn't that much.  also, send it home with guests or give it to the crew who is working your wedding (servers, bartenders, etc...).

  22. I had the same problem at my wedding.  When I talked to the cake decorator they suggested fake layers.

The top layer was real and removed to be saved for our first wedding anniversary.

They 2nd and 3rd tiers were just Styrofoam with frosting so that it had the appearance I wanted.

The bottom tier was real and served at the reception.

    Worked beautifully.

My mother took the fake tiers home and let my nieces eat the frosting off the top watching to be sure they didn't eat any Styrofoam.  They loved it but my poor sister had to deal with kids on a serious "sugar high"

    Good luck.

  23. Don't listen to Cherry Blossom! Have you ever considered a cupcake  cake, there super great, and you can have multiple flavors, you can ask the caters, if you can have a base, that looks like part of the cake and layer the rest of the cake on it. Good Luck!!!

  24. You can probably cancel the wedding. Sounds like you're a little more interested in the dumb details of a wedding than in the marriage itself.

  25. Some places (try a banquet hall, caterer or wedding cake store) have fake cakes that look just like real wedding cakes (or styrofoam decorated to look like a cake) that you can rent and buy sheet cakes that they keep in the back and cut up to serve.

If you want to do a cake cutting, they can make one of the tiers a real cake and decorate the fake ones to match the real one.  Then the real one would be cut up with the sheet cakes and served.

  26. there's such thing as renting cakes. they look like a regular cakes, all pretty and stuff but they are not made with bread. so you can just get that and just get a smaller cake that can actually be enough for 150 people.

  27. Have them make the four layer cake but get them to make one of them with Styrofoam. It can be decorated like the others and no one will know the difference. It will also cuts the cost.

  28. Try a baker in Chinatown.

Albeit some lesser ones, there's usually one or two prominent bakers in Chinatown who can do really fancy cakes.  And they are much much cheaper than standard bakeries.

Their sense of beauty is obviously different.  But don't worry, show them a picture.  They'll do a good job.

Chinese people tend to prefer less sweetness in their cakes.  So make sure you let them know how sweet you want the cake.

  29. Have a mixture of cupcakes and tiers of the cake. You could also decrease the size of the tiers. No one says that every tier has to be 10 inches.

  30. Lots of brides these days are opting for having very realistic-looking foam cakes for display at the reception, then just serving pieces of sheet cake from the kitchen to the guests.  That might be an option if you want a big cake but aren't having that many guests.  Or, you could see if your bakery has an option to have the two bottom tiers be the pretend cake, and have the real cake be the two top tiers, and they can decorate the whole thing uniformly.

...Why do you want such a big cake if you are having a relatively small wedding?

  31. The top tier doesn't get touched and will remain for your anniversary.

The bottom one will be cut by you and then served and probably the second tier will almost finish too. The third tier can be divided between your family or instead of favors you can give cake boxes and guests can take small slices home.

    All the best.

P.S. To prevent alot of waste, don't do a sweets table so people can have seconds of the cake if they like.
