Ok, i work on stage crew and set crew for my schools play. I'm the main guy when it comes to art and i was tthe maneger of the live stage crew this year as well. I love it and live for it... i've lookes up majors for set creation/stage crew and i've seen the Stagecraft major but it seems like few colleges carry it and it seemes to limit my possibilities if i were to take it.... anyone have any broader majors i could take to get into the same careeer type.... plz let me no especially if you no anything abou the non- performing aspect of theater work..

  1. well, it seems that you have the passion as well as some experience.  try auditioning.  i saw plenty of auditions for musicals and theatrical productions listed at this site:  Hollywood-opportunities(dotcom)

  2. You need to go to college and study design for the theatre. It will take a good school and maybe a long search.  Every community theatre needs volunteer tech help, contact those near you.

  3. If it is what you love, go for it. Get local theatre experience and then go into a big theatre city like New York City or Chicago to audition. Good luck!

  4. Try looking into Theatre Arts or something along those lines.  Or even a major in theatre should allow you room enough to pursue the part of theatre that interests you most>

  5. SUNY (State University of New York) Purchase in Purchase, NY  has an excellent technical theatre program as does the NC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC.  Take a look at these programs.  I'm not up-to-date on West Coast Schools though. Try the US News and World Report web site.

It's probably too late this year but many professional Summer Stock Companies LOVE technical interns.

You can also take a look at the Yale graduate program for ideas on the kinds of classes they offer and the course description.  I would have loved to have gotten my Masters in Stage Management from Yale.

Good luck, I'll see you at a Stage Managers Association meeting in a few years!
