I think I will able to take care of it, I've been thinking about this for two weeks now. I've even dreamt about ferrets. I had one when I was little, so I wasn't very resposnible. I don't want to regret getting one again, but I think I am ready for this kind of responsibility. I just don't want to get overwhelmed with the hard work that comes with taking care of a ferret and I would like to see some love from the ferret's side so that I don't get discouraged. That's why I'm wondering if ferrets are loving creatures like some dogs are, or are they more independent like cats?

  1. they are loveable and fun, but they smell, even when you clean the cage every day.

if you're looking for an animal thats similar to a dog, but less work try a rabbit. i currently have one, he plays with dog toys, licks my face, chases his tail, follows me around and lays on my bed with me. they don't smell like ferrets do, but they don't act like this unless you spend a ton of time with them. he was very reluctant the first few weeks.

  2. They are VERY lovable, my boy Blitz gives me kisses all the time, but they like to be independent at times when theyre playing, but they need a friend. This article which is hanging in my room tells you anything you need to know.

  3. I'm glad to see you know a ferret is hard work. They're also expensive to own and take care of and the medical bills can be out of this world.

That being said, I have 11 ferrets. They all have their own personalities. Some don't need/want a lot of attention (tho I give it to them anyway), others are more personable.

Also, the older a ferret gets, the more it'll want to be cuddled and the more love it'll show (in general, not always). Mine give me kisses all the time, some of my younger ones love to be held and treated like a baby. They can be loving, and they can just be in their own little world. It all depends on the ferret.

If you really want a ferret, I'd recommend adopting an older ferret (at least 2-3 years old) and bonding with them exclusively. They do do better in pairs, or better yet threes, but they can be great as singles too. If you adopt, you can look for those ferrets that need single homes only- meaning no other ferrets. That would be a great choice. They'd bond with you really well.

Like I said, each ferret is different and they ALL have different personalities. There's no guarantee that the ferret you get will automatically bond with you like a dog...

I wouldn't trade mine for the world..

  4. My ferret Stinky Slinky is just as, if not more loving than my two dogs.

  5. While I have and love ferrets, I have a question;  What's wrong with having a dog ?  Like you said they are loving creatures. It's practically a guarantee (not always, but almost always) Under the right circumstances, all animals are loving creatures.  But when it comes to loving humans,  dogs are much better at it.

Ferrets can be sweet, funny, loving, affectionate and a joy to have, BUT, they can be aggressive, play bite kind of hard at times, won't share you with your friends, smelly and expensive when it comes time for the vet visits.

They live nearly as long as dogs do, and can be quite a joy, but they DO require more commitment, time and money than   a dog...I wish you luck on your choice, and as long as you care, learn, love and keep on caring, learning and loving.. you'll both be very happy together , whichever one you choose to share your life with :-)
