  3. Hamsters make ideal pets for young and old alike and are an ideal pet for those at work or school during the day as they are nocturnal, sleeping during the day and waking in the evening.

Their cute appearance, lack of smell, relative ease of care and the wide range of species, colours, etc make hamsters the most popular small pet in many countries today.

Apart from the initial expense of the cage and equipment hamsters are relatively cheap to keep and require less care than larger pets.

However, as with any pet, keeping a hamster does require a commitment to caring for it during its lifetime, including veterinary treatment if it becomes ill.

Hamsters take up little room only requiring a cage in which to be kept and so are an ideal pet for those living in apartments or small houses.

The Syrian Hamster is an equally suitable pet for both children and adults, and can be a suitable pet for younger children under supervision. It is the largest of the hamster species kept as pets making in the easiest to handle and is usually tolerant in nature. The Syrian Hamster is solitary once it is mature and so although it may appear to be living happily with others in the pet shop it will require a cage of its own as its solitary nature will already be developing.

Dwarf russian campbells and dwarf winter white russian Hamsters are much less tolerant of clumsy handling than the Syrian Hamster and so are not a suitable pet for younger children. This fact, together with their small size and lively nature means they are a pet more suited to older teenagers and adults. Russian hamsters are socialable and therefore prefer the company of another and so are best kept in pairs or small groups.

Chinese hamsters, although small, require a relatively large cage. They are usually very placid natured and tend to be "quiet" and less lively when handled than the other species of hamsters and so are more suitable for young children than Russian Hamsters. However, due to their small size and timid nature they can be difficult to catch and a young child will find a Syrian Hamster a more suitable pet.

Roborovski hamsters are extremely small and fast making them very difficult to handle even by adults. They are sociable and an amusing pet to observe because of their lively and fast nature but they not a pet that is easily handled. Roborovski hamsters also require a large cage due to their highly active nature.

In all species of hamsters the males are generally more even-tempered than the females and tend to be more "laid back". That is not to say females do not make suitable pets as they do, but generally males make a better pet for a young child.

  4. You can't cuddle with him/her in bed.

  5. PROS- Very easy to handle, fun to watch and easy to clean, they live for a good amount of years (up to 3).

CONS- "Sometimes" If you do not hold him enough, they can get mean or just bite. (it doesnt hurt that bad) Clean cage maybe once a week with sawdust (NOT CEDAR), they're kind of smelly if you dont clean up the cage.

Personal Experience- I love hamsters, I had two before and black one and one teddy bear hamster ( I would recommend them, there cute and easy) named Max and Joey when I was like 10. They were super fun and really nice. Also, if your going to get one, boys are more lazy and cuddly and girls are more running around and all jumpy.

Well I hope I helped! and goodluck with your new furry friend. :)

  6. pros- there fun, they are cute, they are are fun to pet.

cons- cleaning, they bite, p**p every where. and u have to give them fresh water every day.

    overall there fun to have!!!!
