  1. Hedgehogs are great pets for people who are away during the day and home in the evenings to play with them. I started researching hedgehogs when I was 11 and go my first when I was 14 because of all of the research and preparation that goes into hedgehog ownership. I wanted to make sure it was something I actually wanted, and not just a novelty that would wear off. That was nearly 6 years ago and I am still addicted to hedgies.

Initial set up is costly, and vet visits can also cost hundreds of dollars. Here is what you need for basic set up:

    - enclosure: Rubbermaid bins, C&C cages (see link) or commercial/store bought cages will all work. Bigger is better, make sure there is at least 2 square feet of space for the hedgehog to use. Cost: $10-$100 depending on which method you choose

    - bedding: aspen shavings, carefresh or fleece liners.

    - wheel: most hedgehog enthusiasts choose bucket wheels (see link) or comfort wheels with a diameter of 12''. This is crucial to make sure your hedgehog maintains a healthy weight. Cost: $20-$30

    - food: high quality/low fat cat food. NOT hedgehog food because it has few nutrients and will not benefit your pet at all. Wellness, Royal Canin, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, Eagle Pack, etc... are all good brands. Cost: $20 for a typical bag that will last 2+ months

    - accessories: food bowls, toys, litter and litter box, etc... Some toys that are popular are toilet paper tubes and cat toys but there are tons of other suggestions out there :)

Another thing to keep in mind is that hedgies need routine vet care and any suspicious ailments should be treated ASAP. These visits can range from $50 right up into the thousands. Typically, a visit will be about $40-$75, plus any medications ($10-$100), plus x-rays or sedation or surgery if necessary, plus any extra lab tests. Be prepared. Set up a special savings account and arrange a payment plan with your parents should you ever need to borrow a credit card.

This is a great forum for hedgehog owners. Many of your questions have probably already been answered and you  can search for what you need to know. I have been a member for over 4 years and it has helped me every step of the way: www.chins-n-quills.com

Good luck! Keep up the good work :)
