  1. First of all you need to research. I just got my first horse yesterday and have worked my a** off the past 4.5 years. Everyday I research a new illness and research a new discipline. I have been taking lessons for the past 4.5 years as well. I think you should take lessons for a LONG time and decide on a discipline like Hunter or Jumper. NOT TO BE MEAN OR ANYTHING but lots of rich people just buy horses because they have the money but they dont knwo c**p about them. You might not be one of them!! Impress your parents with horse facts since they know a lot about horses and show them you are responsible!!

    Good Luck!!

  2. I'm just going to tell you what I just told another girl:

There are a lot of things you need to take care of a horse. For an easy keeper, it costs over $150 a month to take care of the horse, but that's in my local area, and farrier and vet bills here are relatively low.. but this is not counting putting shoes on a horse, feeding it hay year-round, or board, because my horses go barefoot, and we have lush grass so they don't need much hay or grain, and I work at the farm I board at, so there's no boarding fee. Don't forget to account for accidents.. and horses are accident-prone, so don't think "well my horse won't hurt herself". HAH ! Yeah, okay.

Another thing -- do you know much about TWHs ? They require special hoof care, and while they're great horses, they're gaited, and they cost a LOT, if you get a good one. Do you know that you need a round-skirted saddle to keep out of the way of the horse's hips when s/he gaits ? Do you understand that a TWH bobs his head when he moves ? Do you understand that TWHs don't trot, but rather do a running walk ? I work with TWHs. There is a lot that you need to know.

Please, do research. Lease a horse. Don't buy one right off the bat. Try sponsoring a horse at a rescue to find out how much per month it costs to keep a horse -- and this way you don't have a horse to rehome if you can't keep him.

Horses are great animals, but they cost A LOT.

Do you know that mares get cranky during their heat, and are often not usable during those times ? Do you know that stallions and geldings need sheath cleanings at least annually ? What about stone bruises ? Colic ? Sand colic ? Flies ? Moon blindness ? Navicular disease ? HYPP ? Founder ?

Like I said; research. Don't buy a horse -- they're hard to sell if you need to get rid of them, and once you have it, you can't stop taking care of it. They eat a LOT and they need a lot of care. Are you prepared to drive to the barn every morning and evening to muck stalls and feed ?

I've never owned my own horse, but I work with them. I know that I can't afford one, but I'm content that I get to ride and exercise horses. Try and get into a good situation where you can ride for free, or take care of one for free. There are a lot of people looking for farm help out there. Good luck.

Try and take responsibility for what you want. Get a job at a farm, make money, and buy your own horse with your own money, but ONLY if you can support that horse and take care of him or her.

  3. wow really haha

Go get urself a job at a barn and pay for a horse yourself.

  4. Ok... If you want a horse YOU have to pay for it YOURSELF. I have a horse that lives at my house in a barn with goats and well i am not able to ride him because he has bad arthritis. Well guess what i have to do. I am paying for another horse for me to ride. So i hope you can get a job and pay for one yourself. Plus, you asked why can't you get a horse. well we are not sure because we are not your parents. Ask them.

P.S. and guess how much i have for a horse...not much. I am getting a job at a barn and next summer i'm working at the pool. This is how i can get a horse cause my parents don't have money to pay for another horse. I hope i inspired you to work for what you want.

  5. You know how to ride, well that's a start.

Do you know how to clean tack?

How to check for skin irritation?

How to make sure everything is fitting properly?

    How to pull a mane?

How to get your horses feed correct?

    How to clip the horse?

How to tell when the teeth need filing?

How to keep it in a balanced exercise regime?

I could go on. If you are living in a city it's not that easy to keep a horse and I'm not saying you don't know how to do any of those things just that there is more than just riding ability needed.

However your attitude of I want so I should get would imply that you really don't want a horse for anything other than status.

  6. I'm the exact same way :-)

I just adopted about 15 horses from where i'm a working student.  i do  have special bond with some horses without the financial cost.  i work a lot so i get to ride a lot and get a lot of things to rie.  and i'm learning from a trainer who's really generous in how much she involves me with her lessons and how much riding time we squeeze in, so i don't regret that i never got a horse.  when i work programs i fix a girl's hands and warn "don't hurt my horses's mouth!", and i've figured out exactly where a lot of them like to be scratched, and i say "i told you not to nibble my shirt, son, so now I'm going to pinch your lip and not let go until you decide you don't want me to give attention to your mouth," so that by the end all of the little girls are asking me exactly how many of the horses are mine because it sure seems like i have a lot.  its really cute, all i have to do now to catch them is yell on my way to the gate and many of them will meet me by the time i get there.

if you're really set on getting a horse and you can get one, great.  if you can't well, i'll tell you as someone who really wanted a horse and never got one, that I'm still really happy riding without my own and that i think i learned more because i got a really diverse experience with different animals.  not to mention i can pass by a field, see one of my heart's darlings, and at a whim grab a halter and leadrope, hop on him, and have a quick run around the pasture.  i have fun trying to get on the 17.2 belgian: you first get on the 14.3 morgan then get on the belgian.  i like playing with all of them.

  7. ALL horse-owners should be concerned with exactly the same saddle-fit issues. NO horse can move well or comfortably if its saddle is interfering with its shoulders and/or hips. The walking horse that is used for pleasure riding requires no special shoes. On an average, the walking horse will be shod at a slightly lower angle with more natural toe than some of the western type horses. If your horse is shod when you bought it, have your local farrier check the angles, etc., of your horse's shoes at that time, before the horse loses a shoe or its foot grows beyond the desired length and angle. Keep a record of these angles and lengths and have them handy when the farrier shows up.

The running walk is characterized by its smoothness to the rider and relative ease on the horse. It is much faster than an ordinary walk, averaging speeds of 8-10 miles per hour, with some horses maintaining the gait at 12 miles per hour. (Higher speeds usually mean that the horse has broken gait and may be performing a rack or stepped pace, either of which can pick up considerable speed.) There is an even 1-2-3-4 beat, with a rhythm and footfall pattern identical to a regular walk or flat walk. The flat walk graduates to the running walk as the horse picks up speed and takes a running step as he switches from one front foot to the other. Meanwhile, the hind legs reach far forward, landing well past the track left by the front foot on the same side. The hind legs drive from behind in long strides and the horse may bob his head, flop his ears and even clack his teeth in time to the rhythm.

Oh and by the way ....They do and will trot like every other horse. They can not stay in perfect gait all the time. I really can not stand bad advice from some.

My family breeds and shows the TWH....talk to your parents they have their reasons ....

Proud owner of 2 Reg. TWH, Rocky mountain, Kentucky Mountain , and a Morgan Horse.

  8. you could get a job

  9. "i want a horse really bad".........dont we all but u have to realize that when something is meant to happen then it will happen so suck it up and enjoy what u have now

  10. If your parents had horses they will be easy. If you ask enough and show some responsibility you miht get one.

And if you do take care of it.

  11. you understand the expence but guess what so do your parents. And trust me you will understand it more when you have to pay for it yourself. Your parents prob dont want to buy you a pony / horse because you have not proved to them anything. have you taken an initative? have you saved up money? or are you just whineing at them for one. My parents had the money and my mom owned and ran a breeding program when she was younger, but I still had to work for my first horse to prove to them that I understand there is another life involved not just mine. I payed for it ( the whole $800 :P ) and she was the best little horse. I miss her dearly and she is doing well with a little girl who saved up her money and chose her to be her first horse and then retired her on there farm :)

  12. welcome to the club!! I had the same problem with my parents!! battled with them for 5 years!!!! but then I started taking lessings from my wonderful neighbor and she has finally talked them into it.

First show them (your parents) that u r responsable enough to clean stalls every day. I would also suggest to take leaaons first. that well show them u are dedicated.

    Good Luck!!!!!

  13. yeah when i was 10 i really wanted a horse so I got a job at a local ranch and my parents saw what a great job i was doing they got me a quater horse mare and now i'm 12 and i have 8 horse so try to find a job and work really hard at it and it might pay off.

  14. Same problem here pretty much.

I want a horse so incredibly bad, ever since i was little. Im 14 now. My dad had a horse as a kid till he moved out. My mom didn't but she loves animals.  I've asked for a horse many times but they just won't do it. They know im responsible and everything. They just wont do it.  They have money they just wont pay for it. I don't know why. So when I turn 15 and a half (the age i can get a job) I am going to pay for my own. I probably won't have enough money to buy one so I am going to try to lease one.

  15. "my dad is a country boy so is my mom"

Your mom is a country boy?  Just thought I'd point that out.

If you live in the city you would need a place to board.  Boarding isn't cheap.

But if they have the money and still won't let you have one they must have a reason.  They know from experience what it's like to own a horse so maybe they just don't find you responsible enough or think that you're ready to have one.  Make sure you have a lot of research done and know everything you need to know and present it to them.  And you can tell them to quiz you on anything and everything you need to know about having horses and caring for them.  Show you are responsible in other ways to.  It might help.

But if you want a horse that bad get a job and start saving your money because horses are very expensive and even more expensive to take care of.

I've wanted a horse for a long time too.  So I know the feeling.

Hope I helped and good luck.
