Guild Wars is a good online game. Pay for the game, and the access to the servers is free. They are always adding content. They have add-on modules you can purchase, but you don't have any monthly fees.

It's kind of a mix of how it works. It's not exactly an MMORPG. When your are in a city you can interact with anyone else who is in that city. When you go out of the cities it changes. You form a party with either other people or you can select some NPC's to travel with you before you leave the city. When you enter the countryside it creates your own instance of the land. So the only people you will see are the people in your party, NPC's or monsters. So your party can explore or run missions. There are also PvP areas, guilds and Guild combat. All kinds of stuff. The add-on's you can purchase in the store or on-line.

Battlefield Heroes is coming out and it's looking good! And it's free! You can play World of Warcraft on private servers but you'll need to find one first... Private servers are free =D
