I need a lot of help here. I love snakes to death. I think they are beautiful and finally my mom said I could have one, but first you guys need to help me figure out what kind of snake I need.

I want a generally small "skinny" snake, yet one that could wrap around my arm or neck a little. And one that is not at all agressive. A pretty one is good too. One that is not THAT expensive either. $200 is all I can personally afford.

I dont want to feed it any sort of mammal. Can they eat insects? Mice and all of that just grosses me out, and I find it somewhat cruel.

Just give me tips, I am very clueless.

Thank you!!

  1. Well all snakes need animals but a Garters can live off of fish, frogs and worms. They are small "skinny" snakes. Also green snakes are small and skinny and live off of bugs. You'll have to google what exactly they eat but I know they don't eat mammals.

    Good Luck!

  2. Oh yes I would love a green snake.  Which one you getting though a rough green snake or a smooth green snake?  Either way I'm sure it's a pretty cool choice.

I have a Mexican black king snake and a red-tailed boa.  I was thinking of getting a corn snake as they come in pretty colours and stay smallish (i mean not as big as a boa).

Unfortunately I don't know of any snake that feeds on crickets.  If there is I would like to know about them.  I am under the impression that some snake do eat crickets but also rodents not just only crickets. (So I stand to be corrected here please).  As far as I know generally all snakes feed on some kind of rats, mice, frogs and stuff depending on the type of snake you get.  You can however get pre-killed which is better for both of you (you and snake).

Best thing to do is decide exactly on what type of snake you get and then start asking questions as each snake needs different requirements in regards to lighting, heating, feeding, enclosure, etc.

    Good luck!

  3. A Garter snake is pretty much the only thing you could have where it won't need to eat mammals.

  4. I had a green vine snake that ate crickets. He was awesome! I had him forever!!
