I want to get a snake once my iguana grows out of his 55 gallon tank but I'm having trouble finding one that doesn't HAVE to eat mice/rats. I just want to know of some breeds, the agreesiveness of the snakes, and the food it can eat, also if you know if they are legal in the state of California that would help me as well (not needed, I can look it up myself). Also, I can only get a snake that wont out grow the 55 gallon tank I have, so no gaints please.

  1. Most snakes eat mice/rats unless you get a water snake then you feed them fish. You could get a worm snake and feed it insects.

  2. common green tree snakes they eat mainly frogs, skinks, geckos and small mice 55 gal would be good my mate has 1 in a 46 gal its goes great they are not an aggressive snake. evan in the wild they are not aggressive could be handled if u wanted to all they need in the tank is a few logs, vines to climb cause theyre sub aboreal, and some plants they usually range from anywhere from $50 to $150 great snakes they are hardy so yeah i would rekomend it

  3. Garter snakes can be fed fish, worms, slugs, leeches and frogs. As well as mice, of course.

Don't know the legal status in CA, but I'd be shocked if they weren't legal

If you get a garter snake that outgrows a 55 gallon tank you don't have a snake you have a mutant.

  4. Most species of snake eat rat/mice, but almost all will take frozen thawed.  If that is alright then almost any colubrid and many of the small pythons could live out their lives in a 55 g. tank.  I would not recommend a ball python as many are finicky eaters and you might have to deal with live to get it to eat.  Garters and green snakes do not eat rats/mice, although many captive born and bred garters will take small mice in addition to fish and worms.  Green snakes are insect eaters but require UV lighting and supplementation since they don't take mammals.
