I really want one once school starts. How can I convence my mom (she hates any kind of spiders, esp. big ones) I had a gecko so I have a 10 gallon tank and I have accessories to go with it, so it's not like I have to buy alot of items for it all I need really is the food and the knowage of owning and taking care of one.

My question is what is the pros and cons of keeping one as a pet?

  1. I have never heard of a tranchula, but a Tarantula will be fine.  They are great pets and fun to interact with.  Go Nuts! Your mom might even warm up to it once she sees how nice they can be...

  2. get it tranchulas are awesome

  3. PROS:

They don't bark (although some can make sounds).

    They don't claw the furniture.

If you go away for a week (or even 2), they don't die of starvation.

They don't need a litter box.

They don't need to be walked.

    They are interesting and educational.

They are VERY quiet (although some can make sounds).

    They are very low-maintenance pets.

They can be helpful in getting rid of unwanted visitors. (I'd invite you over, but my Tarantula doesn't like strangers.)

They take up very little space. (If you only have one!)

If caged properly, they aren't under your fee.

No license, shots, collars, brushes, or other extra (expensive) equipment needed!

You don't have to bathe them, and they groom themselves.

They are odorless. (Assuming you clean out the left-over cricket parts.)

Some are really beautiful, all of them are at least neat looking.

Gives you something really different to talk about. ("You'll never believe what my Tarantula did yesterday".)

    They carry no diseases.

Like fish they are enclosed in a tank, no mess to step into.

Are great for breaking the ice with new people. Tarantulas are a great conversational piece.

They teach discipline, not the easiest to care for so you must stay vigilant.

The bite of most species, including the G. rosea (Chilean rose) is NOT medically significant.

Keeping one can change mild arachnophobes into arachnophiliacs.

    You'll learn latin fast.

    CONS:

You have to listen to crickets chirping (which may actually be a pro for some).

Must be cared for diligently, no putting off like with fish (Also can be listed a Pro IMHO).

Some people are intimidated of them. This fear can range from mild to a extreme phobic of spiders.

You may be called 'Weird' or at least 'Eccentric'.

Once you're hooked you'll have a desire to visit ancient lands and explore in search of an unknown species of theraphosid unknown yet to man. You'll learn many languages and learn of many cultures in your travels. Then, when all is done, you'll have created in yourself a self filled with the wonderment of it all and in the end. You'll have the pride of knowing that the simple interest in one small, fuzzy Rosie, created in you the respect and responsibility to teach others such as your mother & father, that these creatures are a necessary and wonderful addition to our natural world and to those of us that maintain them.

They might escape the tank and poison some members of your family if they are poisionous.

  4. i dont blame her spiders=creepy. but if you want one that bad tel her that you will sercure the cage extra extra good and that it willl never escape and maybe she'll go for it.

  5. Personally, I agree with your mom, but I also see your side too.If you think that you are at a responsible age, try to show your mom your maturity by offering to take care of a plant or something to show that you can be responsible. Prove that you will not forget about your tarantula and give her a guarantee that if the spider ever gets lose or if you don't clean its tank, that you will promise to take it back to the pet store. That's always reassuring for a parent.

  6. I don't really see any pros to having a spider, except that its a spider. The cons, would be that it could escape..you can't play with it, and you're going to have to clean up after it (when it spools its web everywhere). Plus, if your mom doesn't want you to get one..I'd just give up. My mom hates mice..sooo, we ended up getting a cat a few years back. lol. Maybe you'd like a frog? I used to have a leopard frog, and they're pretty cool. You can set up little pools for them, play with them a little, and decorate their tank. The only gross part is feeding them crickets..but since you have a gecko..I'm sure you're used to the "gross" feedings. lol.  Good luck!

  7. honestly i don't think there are any pros.

im with your mom on this one

  8. why would you want a tranchula?

You should read about it and find out for yourself

    Go to the library

  9. Move out, then get what you want kid.

  10. It might escape the tank

    and kill your whole family

    not worth the risk

  11. I don't blame your mom.

  12. They don't like to be pets. They want to be in their real environment. If you really like spiders, leave them alone and let them be in a healthy environment, not a tank.

No you can't say that about any animal. Dogs and cats are domesticated. They follow their masters, search for company and love humans. Things like  Spiders are NOT DOMESTICATED!!!! They RUN from people. THEY WANT TO BE IN THEIR HABITAT!!! I hope your mom says no. Poor spider.

  13. okay first. u do know that they r not like a "pet". they make amzing pets for people who like the beauty of them but not to cuddle and play with. and if u want one then u need to do reserch
