I went to Sandringham (sp?) this weekend and saw the ferrets and fell in love. But i live in Hong Kong but i am moving back next summer. I asked my mum if i could have 2 ferrets when i moved back and she seemed pretty ok about except the fact she keeps mentioning "they will drive the dogs crazy." how can i persuade her to let me have them. I am good at looking after pets i am responsible and everything. I reaally want ferrets.

i am 15 (so 16 by next summer) and i have had hamsters and such before which have all lived long healthy lives.

  1. If you want a ferret I'd get a ferret and if your dogs are not house trained I put them outside and just keep the ferret in a cage in a separate room from the dogs.

  2. Can you put the ferret cage in your room? Then just lock out the dogs and you can take the ferrets out to play when in your room, and the dogs won't bother them and they won't bother the dogs. ;P

I have 5 rats living with my dog, Ginger. She's a beagle/basset hound mix, so she's pure hunting dog.. and she's totally used to them by now. In fact, when I brought my first boy home, Templeton, she went up to sniff him and he nipped her nose. She's been a little scared of them ever since!! ;P

As long as you keep them separated and supervise any time they're in the same room, I think it would be alright. Just remember to do TONS of ferret research before you get them! Google is a wonderful tool!! ;P Good luck!

  3. Hey! Yeah I have 4 dogs, two birds and a ferret (just one...for now lol) so with good supervision it can be done and you need to use good judgment too. For example, I have 2 little dachshunds mixes that are pretty well train so my rules that they go by is if the ferret comes up to them they can play with it but when the ferret is out my german shepard is outside and my puppy is in a cage.you need to watch how they play. if you don't feel comfortable having them play together then either cage the dogs( but watch the ferret because the ferret can slip into dog cages) or put the dogs outside to let the ferret have its mandatory playtime, or make your room as ferret proof as possible. that means getting on your hands and knees and looking around, and remember anything a ferret can get its head into it can slip into...

As far as convincing your mother, maybe there is someone that you can borrow there ferret and show her you can take care of it with the dogs being the in house too. however way  the dogs responded to the hamster it is a good indication of how its gonna be with the ferrets and also let her know that you are willing on work on keeping all the animals apart to make it a happy household.

    -I hope it helps-

  4. As long as you keep them separated you should be fine, But if you cant I wouldn't get one. When I was 17 my dog attacked our ferret and killed it. It devastated me because I watched her do it. Couldn't be mad because it was our fault, dogs hunt. So please if you do get one keep it separated. Also watch your toes, they love to nibble on them!
