  1. AVG and avast may be tried. Both are available free though the paid versions will be more effective

  2. Try Avg 8.0 free edition free license, simply the best, it got email protector  , anti spam and etc.. I never got any virus once I installed AVG 8.0, and it can eliminate any kind of virus when I tried one of my friends usb flash drive. Just dont install multiple anti virus software, or else you will experience slow pc performance.

  3. Try Avast.

Avast Home Edition version 4.8 is an effective anti-virus program.

You can do a boot time scan in safe mode in order remove every single virus on your PC.

Even those viruses that hide inside the system restore folder.

  11. A very good, free anti-virus available to download is AVG 8 Anti-virus:

    http://www.free.grisoft.com

And for any spyware problems, get SpyBot - Search and Destroy:

    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirro...

Also, for protecting your personal info and files, use Ad-Aware 2008 Free Edition:

All of them are free, as powerful as paid programs, like Norton and McAfee, and don't use up as many resources.

Just boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 when turning on the computer) and run full scans.

    Hope that helps.

  12. i'm not sure where these people are getting their answers from.

AVG is free. Norton is not. AVG is good I've used it before.

Also try Avast. It's excellent. Avira is very good. It saved me a couple of times. I have it on one of my PCs.

See usual download sites like www.download.com, tucows etc.

  13. Norton Antivirus and Spyware doctor.

  14. Dont just look at AVs

You need the full gambit of something that works as Antivirus, Firewall, AntiSpam and other things such  Ad/Spyware.

I personally believe that ESET NOD32 Smart Security is the best!

    http://www.eset.com/smartsecurity/

To compliment this, I also use ThreatFire.  ThreatFire is a FREE product designed to pick up security threats off of behavioral based vice signature based.  It is meant to be used to compliment whatever AV program you choose.  This will help protect you against things that do not have a virus signature created yet.

EDIT - Sorry Drool...  The free products you listed will never be able to compete with Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky or ESET.  It is usually one of those BIG companies that find the viruses first and then your small "free" companies copy the signatures once they are released every 24 hours!

I guess it comes down to how important the information is on your computer.  Its like buying "better insurance".  However, if your not paying for the insurance at all... you probably are not going to get much of a guarantee!

One important thing is the fact that you should completely update the Operating System and ALL of the patches.  If your machine is patched for the vulnerability on the HD, then YOU cannot get infected.  It is the more proactive approach (patching your machine, keeping your software updated, using the most current firmware and drivers).  AV is ALWAYS reactive!

  15. avira antivir free edition...

  16. AVG is useless,

    try NOD32

    Kaspersky

    BitDefender

    in tht order

for free to use ones..thrs nothing better than Avast! Home Edition
