  1. A 'belly' is caused by your internal organs bulging outwards, because the muscles around your waist aren't strong enough to keep them compressed.

Having a flat tummy (NOT a 'sixpack') is useful for your health & fitness, because it means that your innerds are being squeezed all the time. This squeezing helps your intestines to digest effectively, helps to support your spine, and helps to control your breathing.

Pilates classes will teach you how to strengthen and tighten these muscles, together with the rest of your 'core' (pelvic floor, back, breathing muscles and abdominals). You will also learn how to do a 'pelvic tilt'. This movement helps to 'engage' the right muscles during ordinary activity, so that you can improve your abdominal health (and your shape) ALL the time, not just when you're exercising.

Many people (including professionals who should be well-educated enough to know better) think that situps and crunches can tighten the right muscles to flatten a belly. This idea IS A MYTH.

Situps, leg-raises, and crunches focus most of the effort on a small, superficial muscle layer at the front of your torso. However strong this muscle ('Rectus Abdominis') gets, it can't flatten your belly. Having a strong, bulging RA muscle can look good (the 'sixpack'). But it will cause back trouble later in life, unless the rest of your Core is just as strong. It's very difficult to train the RIGHT muscles, when you're lying down.

You need to do WAIST-TWISTING and HIP-WIGGLING movements, with your body upright. (in Pilates, you stand on a turntable, and 'do the twist'. Capoeira, Kayaking, Salsa dancing and Martial Arts that use a high knee action (like Kickboxing), can all help to flatten your belly.

AVOID losing weight. This can make the problem worse, by weakening the muscles even more. If you are doing the right activities, and eating enough to power them, then you can improve your body shape even if your weight increases at the same time.

  2. an  excellent  exercise,  you  can do it in front of your TV: sit on a

stool,  and  put  your toes under something (piece of heavy furniture,

for  example). In your hands hold a little dumbbell. Please, make sure

that  it  is  not very heavy, start with one kilo, for example, or you

will  damage  your  back and spine! Slowly move the upper part of your

body  back, until it's parallel with the ground. Stop for a second and

move it back to the sitting position. Repeat ten times. Every week add

to  the  number  of  repetitions.  You will see the results in a week,

guaranteed! You will see or feel under the fat - if you have any - six

pack  and  muscles.  Dumbbells  do  wonders.  Much  better  than these crunches  -  I  came  up to three hundreds and there was no results AT ALL. With the dumbbells you will see it in a week.
