  1. Have a look at Dali Ikon or Bowers & Wilkins 800's.

  2. For $1,500 or less there are quite a few out there that are good sounding from JMlab (Focal), B&W, ProAc, Dynaudio, etc.  But what I would choose (and I'm speaking on 2-channel audio) would be either a pair of the Silverline Audio Preludes or a pair of the Silverline SR16.  Also, a nice combo is the Silverline Minuets with an Hsu Research VTF-2 Mk3 powered sub.  I've had this combo in my smallish room and it sounded fantastic!  I don't even think of home theater when I have a high-end 2-channel system.

If you want to try something different, Magnepan has a special deal going on for awhile for their MMG ribbon speakers for $550/pr. and put and Hsu sub with it, and it's all good as well as different.  The only downside to the Manepan is the narrow sweet-spot.  Other than that, they are different and exceptional.

If you're still considering a receiver, I recommend Pioneer Elite or Onkyo.  If you can afford it (or find a used one on eBay), I would recommend Arcam for superb sound.

    Happy listening!
