I want to home school my son and don't know how to go about getting the information for arizona. He doesn't like what is in school and because he is mentally advanced for his age is school mates and teachers actually accuse him of cheating when he gets things right. I live in arizona any starting point would be great. I have been trying the internet and I tend to get lost and overwhelmed it is not my field of expertinse and seems to be yours.

Would you like to help a mom that wants to learn along with her kid.

  1. Try this support group

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/arizona-ho...

Hope that helps.  I notice that it is a Christian group so if that doesn't fit your style, you may want to do search of other groups and may even find one for your city/county.

  2. You are already getting what you actually asked for, but I thought I'd let you know of a great yahoo group for homeschoolers.

Its open to people of all beliefs.

  3. Hi - sorry, my email is turned off on Y!A because I kept getting annoying little rants from students that I wouldn't help cheat :)

I'll turn it on temporarily and send you my email.  Happy to help!

I totally understand what you mean - I had a lot of friends help me in the logistics of homeschooling itself, but homeschooling a gifted kid is a whole 'nother world :)  I wish I had had someone to go to (when we started) when he advanced more quickly, and in different ways, than everyone around him.

I'll email you now, let me know if it doesn't come through.  Thanks!

Edit - HS Mom also homeschools a very gifted boy; she would also likely have some helpful things to say :)

Edit - Sorry, my brain was apparently on "neutral" last night, how could I forget ysn!  He is a veritable fount of info and has tons of great ideas.  I suggest you contact him as well!

  4. I also homeschool a gifted child - I don't have as much experience as the others here but I'd be happy to help as I can.

    My email is turned on....

  5. As HSmomLovinIt said, I also HS my son. He's profoundly gifted.  It is a *whole 'nuther ballgame* with a GT kid.

Here is my ultimate, favorite website for "all things gifted":

    http://www.hoagiesgifted.org

It's not just for HS'ing, but there is a lot of HS'ing info there.

There is also a great online e-list for HS'ing gifted kids, TAGMAX:

Click on subscribe to join.  They were a HUGE help to me when I started HS'ing.

Someone mentioned K12.  There is AZVA in AZ.  You might look into that as an option.  It's a great bridge between public school [in a building] and true homeschooling.  AZVA, being a virtual charter school, is a public school, but you do the work at home.  We've used the K12 curriculum, as private HS'ers, for over 5 years and it's a great fit for my son.

My email is turned on, too, so feel free to contact me.

  6. I am not the person you referenced, but I can give you some advice.

First, while I am not a member of HSLDA, their website definitely has good information regarding the homeschool laws by state.  Go to http://www.HSLDA.org .  On the top right of the website, there should be a US map with a pull down menu.  Click on Arizona in that pull down menu and there should be tabs for the law, associations, etc.

Check http://groups.yahoo.com and type in "Arizona Homeschool" or "Phoenix Homeschool" (replacing Phoenix with your area) and you are bound to come up with a group for homeschoolers near you.  They will be able to give you informed information about homeschooling in your state, not just legally but other resources and activities.

    I wish you the best!

  7. go to www.k12.com and you can get info there, it is a virtual school and is a great school. it is for all states and has a number you can contact if you have questions or want to sign him up(dont do it this late in the year, wait til next year so he passes)there is a monthly fee of $90.00 and extra for books and supplies, but its worth it.

    hope i helped

    good luck
