The first intensive agricultural societies were the ancient civilizations in Egypt, Mesopotamia (now Iraq and eastern Syria), India and Pakistan, North China, Mesoamerica, and Western South America.  Today, intensive agriculture is the primary food production pattern in all developed nations except those that are too arid or too cold for any form of farming outside of greenhouses.  Over the last century, large-scale agricultural techniques spread rapidly throughout the world with

the introduction of farm machines driven by internal combustion engines and the availability of commercially produced fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides.  This essentially resulted in the industrialization of farming in the richer nations.

Intensive agriculture in Egypt can only take place along the Nile river and in limited area with irrigation.  Egypt is mostly a desert environment so water is needed for irrigation.  Egypt grows many crops including Cotton, Wheat, Barley and they have many fruit orchards.  Most farms are small and family owned but they supply most of the food needs of the local population.  They have even begun to export food to Europe.

    History of ploughing

    1) Ploughing: Nile flood deposited the nutrients on top, and the ploughing served just to break up the top soil. The Egyptian plough was lightly built and carried by a single cow or human. Another way for loosening the soil was hoeing it with simple wooden axes.

    2) Sowing: The sower walked back and forth over the moist field, a two handled woven basket tied around his neck, and his hands free for sowing.

    3) Driving hogs or sheep over the field covered the seeds with earth, to push the seeds out of the reach of birds looking for a quick meal
