  1. A class 100 room is a very clean environment.

Outside, normally you breath in about 100,000 particles per cubic meter of dust, spores, smoke particles, pollution, etc.   In a clean room, the air is filtered, and filtered again to make it clean.  People entering these clean rooms have to wear special clothing called "bunny suits" to keep all the stuff that would shed off their clothes and bodies, out of the room.  They even have to wear air masks because they could breath out small contaminates.

The reason these rooms have to be so clean, is because they make integrated circuits in these rooms and other nano-technology.  Even a dead skin cell -- if it landed on an unprotected micro-circuit -- could ruin the circuit.

I've seen under a powerful microscope what a small piece of skin (microscopic) looks like when it lands on an integrated circuit.  It is "huge" compared with the little transistors and metal wires.  The small particles can really ruin a circuit.

Quality assurance is all about producing things that don't fail.  If these integrated circuits were produced in a 'dirty' room, none of them would work (or very few of them would work).  So the quality assurance guys and girls take measurements of how clean the room is to make sure it doesn't get above 100 particles per cubic meter.
