  1. " if he has babies we can sell them for profit" i know that that is kinda sad but im just thinking of all the possibilities. uhhhhuhuhhuhuuuh...

  2. Honestly I don't think you should be backyard breeding. You need to know certain things like you can't touch the babies until 2 weeks of age and eyes opened, have fur, eating solid foods. And beware that the mom hamster can actually eat her babies. Also if you plan on keeping on all the babies, your going to need more cages. I would say no more than 2 in a cage if dwarf or if teddy bear only 1 in a cage.

  3. Breeding hamsters is a very big step; if this is your first hamster, I STRONGLY advise you not to get into breeding.

When I was 12 I got my first two hamsters, and allowed them to breed...you have no idea how out of control that got! xP; Because the daddy stayed in the same cage as the mommy, as soon as she had her first liter, she ended up pregnant again, and then the siblings began to breed with one another, and by the time I had finally been able to sort out all the hamsters (the boys, the girls, the ones too anti-social to be with other hamsters) I had a total of thirty-two hamsters, spread among seven cages, which, I might add, were cleaned by yours truly once a week, every week.

My room (as well as most of the hallway) reeked of hamster scent, while hamster cages, hamster toys, hamster food and hamster bedding lay scattered throughout my room.

That was about 2 years ago, and only a year and a half ago did I finally rid myself of my very last hamster, and vowed to never breed rodents again...well, I'm at it again already with my darling Roborovski, but I know what I'm doing now a days :)

Anywho, what I'm trying to say is, raising babies are a big responsibility; especially if the misfortune falls upon you that the mommy hamster dies with no surrogate to replace her (oh god, that was h**l on earth for me xD)

In my own personal experience, I found that getting rid of the babies was one of the hardest things to do, once I get past the fact that I want to keep every single one of them and love them forever and ever, and I actually go out to give them away, I found that its vey hard to find people that are willing. My local petstores (Petco, Petsmart, etc.) weren't interested in taking my babies, because they already had exclusive breeders. If your friends and family don't take them, you may end up keeping all those hammie babies..and all the inbred babies they produce, if you don't sort them out by gender.

Oh god, I was rambling wasn't I? Sorry, but my point is, don't try to convince your mom, just be content with one hamster; breeding, raising and caring for hamsters can be tough...and expensive...

  4. NOOOOOO.... breeding is expensive as h**l... hamsters can produce up to 20 pups at a time, there is so much that can go wrong.... do NOT do it unless youve read and re-read all the articles, books and websites there ever was!! this as expensive and emotionally and financially draining. what if one of the hamsters needs vet care? what if multiples hammys do? youll need spare cages incasre they fisht, food, bedding, chew sticks..... youll be constantly cleaning cages. please, do NOT do this!!

  5. It's not okay. Hamsters have many babies. You'll need more than just one extra cage, unless you know how to determine the gender of the hamsters. Then you could put females in one cage and males in the other, though I'd bet that there would still be some fighting if the animals felt crowded. Do you earn an allowance and would it be enough for additional supplies and food?

Or, will you be able to find homes for all the babies? For sure?

  6. First of all, you need to know what you're talking about before posting stupid things like this. You need more than 2 cages...when the babies mature they cannot remain together in the same cage! The male & female will need to be seperated afterwards, also. It's not a good idea.  Are you willing to provide up to 20 more cages for the hamster babies? I DON'T THINK SO. You're a child, don't be soo rediculous. Sorry...but these questions really bother me! Poor hamsters :( get the necessary information before you try things like this. Your mom is right, so let it be.

  7. It isn't okay.

Pet Store hamsters should never be bred.

Syrian breeding should only be done by an experienced breeder, since the personality is so territorial, they can kill each other.

    Dwarfs are only marginally easier.

Pet Store hamsters have often been inbred and that will show up in the babies as missing limbs, organs, or eyes.

Keep in mind Syrians are solitary by nature, so each and every baby will need its own cage.

    IF you insist:

Do you have a small animal vet and funding in case the pregnancy or birth goes wrong? Or if one severely injures the other?

Do you know both of their medical histories? Pet store hamsters should not be bred, as you don't know their family history with defects or injuries. The hamsters you have now may even be inbred.

If you got them from a breeder, call and ask the breeder's advice.

Are you planning to keep the babies or adopt them out?

If you are planning on keeping them, you need to get enough living spaces for them- new cages, etc.

If you are going to adopt them out, you should have enough homes BEFORE the babies are conceived.

    How old is the female?

If she gives birth and decides she isn't ready, she will eat her babies. Same if she is too old. Anything over 4 months is too old to be bred for the first time.

The male needs to either not be housed with her during the pregnancy, or removed IMMEDIATELY after the babies are born, or he will impregnate her within minutes or hours or birth, that's how hamsters work.

Do you know enough not to try and change the bedding for a week or so after the babies are born, so as not to upset the mom? If they smell like humans, she will eat them.

That is a lot to think about and do research into.

    Please don't do something stupid.

Contact breeders in your area and get some research done

  8. Well you would have to get another cage. That is if you have a syrian hamster. Female syrian hamsters are very cruel to male hamsters. The female will bite him, fight him, and not let him sleep with her. She will be very territorial. If you have a Dawarf hamster then they will be fine.Dawarf hamsters get along very good and they both take good care of their babies. Each helping out. BUT i would suggest that you still get another cage because  hamsters will tend to prduce very often because hamsters are the #1 most producing animal on Earth. Pups (baby hamsters) can breed with their sisters and brothers at 4 weeks of age and the parents can breed after 1 week of giving birth. So that means that you would have to make sure buy 3 more cages. 1 for the female pups, 1 for the male pups, and 1 for the female mama. You don't wanna leave the pups to long with the mother becaue she will fight them and in some cases eat them. Also you would want another cage to put the mama in because to  much breeding will break the hamsters hips and I'm pretty sure no one wants that for there hammy. Hope this info worked!!! :)

  9. you cant because its NOT okay for them to have babies.

  10. you only need 2 cages, one for dad, and one for mom and babies for up to 4 weeks.but you must make sure you have homes for them at 4 weeks. because i think at about 35 days or so they can begin to breed on there  own. but i wouldnt bother having any.what if you cant find homes for them.

  11. You really dont need to breed them. Hamsters have way too many babies, and what if you end up not being allowed to keep them all, and you are having problems selling them? Also, the mother will eat some of her babies. Are you prepared for these situations? Breeding is just a horrible idea.  There are plenty of hamsters for sale, go buy a baby one. Don't breed to get a baby.

  12. my Hamsters had babies!! It was a GREAT experience! I had to have 3 cages. One for mom and the babies and  one for dad. but i ended up having 2 litters. You need 3 cages cause 1 for the mom when the babies get old enough to be on there own, 1 for the babies and 1 for the dad. But be careful baby hamsters can  die easily. DON'T TOUCH THEM UNTIL THEY ARE COVED IN HAIR.  I think u should get 2 have babies!! there sooo cute and r fun!! But there a BIG responsibility so if you think your ready then go for it!! and please choses this for a best answer!!!! I have NEVER had been chosen for best answer and i have helped so many people. Please?! Thank you very much!
