Why not? I am suggesting you just do your Project related to DSP. Digital Signal Processing side, Also look for networking where all the curent trends are going in to that way. This will help you to understand all the hidden things inside.

Remember That you are in communication side, so that you can try those things; as those projects are closly related to communication..

The robotic arm is a very good idea and very challenging. It depends on your funding as well. There are many good stepper motor controllers available. Otherwise think of something that will make your life easier. That way you can use it in the end. Programming and control wise, (sorry your acronyms mean little) you could design and program a mock video camera that will pick up and follow a person at the fence. This will give the impression that someone is inside and watching. With the recognition matrices available it can be done.
