The best way to find good travel writings would involve either a book store or a library and checking some out. Bill Bryson has some great travel books, if I may make a recommendation.

As far as conservation, you should try requesting information from the local area that you are interested in. The US Department of the Interior also has some good resources, as well as the Department of Agriculture. Your local Department of Natural Resources would be a great place to email or call for more info.
