We just recently used the "allure vinyl plank flooring" from home depot -looks like laminate". It was supposed to be easy, but my husband said it was kind of a pain because you had to cut every piece and the vinyl planks were really kind of tough to cut. We need something durable. We have 3 small children and a puppy. We also need something fairly cheap. We haven't ever installed laminate. Is it hard?

  1. having installed all types of flooring, the allure is the easiest to install. you need a very good chop saw with a fine tooth blade for the laminate or wood. With allure you only need a sharp blade. You could use vinyl tiles, but they come up or delaminate easily and you still have to cut them for fits. I installed the allure a year ago and it is holding up well.

  2. You should be able to get some good help from the Home Depote that you get your flooring from . They have videos on a lot of the products that they sell . Talk to the salesman that sold you the flooring so he can let you see the videos on the installation proses or the department manager .

  3. No, but take this hard-won piece of advice.

Go to Lumber Liquidators (you will be amazed how much less it costs than home depot) and ask for a sample of their laminates to take home.  Then, go soak them in a bucket of water for a week and see which ones did not swell...get that kind!  If you don't you'll always be freaking over spills.

  4. Peel a stick carpet tiles are becoming popular. No cutting or gluing. Find the center of the room, peel and stick. They stay down in place but if something gets on one of the tiles you can pull it up and wash it with a hose outside or replace it with another tile. It's inexpensive and practical with children and animals and it looks nice. There is a large variety of patterns and colors. I think if you look into this you'll find it's a pretty good option.

  5. Laminate would be your easiest install. There are many brands out there that just snap together. You'll need to put down an underlayment of plastic and batting but it is much easier than installing any other kind of flooring. I did 3 rooms over the course of a weekend using a brand that  had "lock tight" or something or other in the name. Making the cuts is a pain but it is easier than tiling, putting in carpet or real hardwood floors by a mile.
