  1. Technically that's illegal, but there are ways to get around this problem.  First, you can download programs that will allow you to rip copyrighted DVDs directly to your HD.  You can sometimes find them on foreign web sites (British/Australian) where the rules about copying DVDs are slightly different.   I will let you go and find them on your own if you wish because they are mostly illegal in the US.

There are two ways that I can tell you that are less illegal.  You can get yourself a Video Capture card... for example:

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/...

This one will allow you to connect either your TV or an external DVD player to your computer, and it will allow you to capture the signal.  I'm not sure if this is illegal or not, but I doubt it is perfectly legal.  You certainly aren't ripping any protection software in this case however.

The other option is software called "Video Screen Capture" software.  VSC software is available for free at the link below or at Download.com.

    http://all-streaming-media.com/record-vi...

    (click CamStuido)

This allows you just to digitally capture/record any movies showing up on your computer screen (some with sound, some without).  Of course, if you want to do this well you need a relatively powerful computer, plenty of space on your HD, and it's probably better to buy some VSC software than to use the free stuff.

    Good Luck.
