I'm 18 now and i've always wanted to be on broadway, not an actor, not a singer, not a dancer, but a combination of the three. I want to do small productions since I only have formal training and singing and dancing, but I don't know where to look.

Is there a way I could do plays and musicals and lessons as a hobby while staying focused in school? (I'll be a paint and art history major in September)

  1. Unless you DO intend to devote our life to getting ALL the skills you need, then start NOW to focus of your college major.  Are you as passionate about ART as Broadway?  You sound conflicted - but since you have almost ZERO chance of getting onto Broadway, focus on YOUR CHOSEN major in college.  Yes, you can always be in amateur productions - and even THOSE are competitive, if they are any GOOD.

There a zillions of people that think that if the WANT IT BAD ENOUGH, they can somehow  - without the passionate dedication to building their craft - get there. HAH!!! It is easier to become a brain surgeon - since THEY are actually in demand, and there are more Broadway wannabees than ROACHES in NYC.

Good luck with the art history and painting - also not exactly a guaranteed source of employment.

  2. The easiest thing to do is major in theater at your college. My college has a fantastic theater program, and has many productions every year. Find a college with a good theater program, that program will also teach you and show you how to audition for Broadway/off Broadway productions or other professional productions ( and you may get some inside help)

  3. Did you ever think that there might be ways to combine your various interests? Studying theater and art could lead to something like scenery design or cinematography.

Don't forget that you will have to take your general ed. classes, and I think at our college, dance qualifies for P.E. for example. And singing classes help your speaking voice and presentation skills. Good luck.
