I also don't want an old model because then I'll be mad when a new one comes out shortly after! I was looking at the 870 or 790, but I can't decide.

  1. here is  what is important:

No more  than 6 to 8 megapixels. Unless you intend to print gigantic pictures, all you need is 6 to 8 megapixels.  Image stabilization. AA batteries.

  2. The SD870 IS is last year's model. The SD790 IS would make a great choice.

However...did you know that the SD790 IS and the SD770 IS are IDENTICAL.

The only real difference between these two cameras is that the SD770 IS has a 2.5" LCD and an optical viewfinder.

And the SD790 IS has a 3.0" LCD, but no viewfinder.

So, I would actually suggest you consider the SD770 IS instead...and it's cheaper than the SD790 IS.

You will also need to buy an SD memory card (2GB is a good minumium capacity). Sandisk Extreme III is a good fast card. Format it before you use it and everytime you need to delete all images in one go...

  3. I have the SD 870 and the camera is incredible! clear pics and excellent zoom options! 3.8 optical and 4 digital

    nice big 3 inch screen!

I compared many new models and they are up to 10 - 12 megapixels; you just don't need that many! 8 megapixels is more than enough and plenty clear even if you want to zoom in on the computer!
