too much land is being taken up by humans and the animals have no place to go (ever see them on the road where cars run over them because the animals are looking for food).  So we are trying to preserve many different species, and especially those animals on the endangered list.

The reason for wildlife conservation is make sure that the resources that we draw from nature continue to replenish themselves.

Plants and animals are the source for most of our medicines - we might make the chemicals in labs, but we find the original source in the wild.

Premarin (tm) is a drug prescribed for women to help balance the hormonal changes that occur in menopause.  The main active compound in the drug that makes it effective is found in urine from pregnant female horses. I believe it is now manufactured in a lab, but for a while, herds of female horses were raised for their urine to manufacture the drug.

Compounds that help relieve pain are found in the secretions from the skin of a tropical frog.  If we destroyed all the frog's habitat, we would not have found a good substitute drug for pain relief that is non-addictive.

Needs and necessities for wildlife conversation - wildlife needs clean water and clean air, they need room to forage for their food.  There is a food chain that all plants and animals are part of.  If one part of the food chain is greatly reduced or removed, it affects the rest.

If there is not enough grass and small plants due to drought, the insect population is smaller the next year.  Fewer insects and less grass means a smaller and sicker bird and rodent population in the 1st and 2nd years.  By the end of the 2nd year and into the third year, larger  plants eaters are sick and dying, having fewer offspring.  The larger carnivores are eating more and more sick animals, fewer healthy animals and fewer anmials in total.  They increase their hunting range, moving into new territory.  If no wilderness is available, they begin raiding into human occupied areas.  To a mountain lion, coyote, wolf or bear, dogs and cats are just food.  Children are also just food to them.  

A couple of years ago in San Diego, a Mountain Lion was stalking people who were walking on a hiking trail in the foothills.  Most people had been in groups, so the lion did not attack, but it did charge a boy riding his bicycle.  The animal control people tranquilized it, took it to the national forest and released it.  The animal was severely underweight and was probably starving.
