  1. California - Joseph Phelps Insignia, Merus, Krupp, Screaming Eagle - all reds, ranging from $200 to $1200

France - any First Growth fits the bill well; Petrus is the most expensive Merlot in the world.

Australia - Mollydooker Velvet Glove, Chris Ringland Shiraz - $200-500.

Spain - Vega Sicilica Unico, Termanthia  - $250-495.

    Chile - Montes "M" $200

    Argentina - Cobos Malbec $300

Just a few examples...there are many more.

To correct an earlier post, for the past decade the best years in Bordeaux have been the ODD years, not the even ones (although '04 was good in the Rhone).

    Hope this helps.

  2. My two favorite expensive reds are both from the same producer in Italy.

    1. Antinori "Toscana Solaia" depending on vintage $150+

    2. Antinori "Tignanello" again depending on vintage $90+

These may not be the most expensive wines on the open market, but they are two of the best.

  3. French wines are the best and most highly regulated for sulfite, homogenous grape mixtures and process.  They are regulated like:

    Catagory, lowest to best:

Bordeaux, B Superior, Cru Borgeious, Cru Superior, Grand Cru Classe

    Regions, lowest to best:

Bordeaux in this case, then Haut Medoc, Margaux, whatever you like.

I would select the region then the catagory dependent on how much you want to spend and go to Trader Joes, they have the best deals on French wines.  Keep in mind that for these regions the even years were best.

  4.   French ones -

Chateau Auzonne - Chateau Margaux - Chateau Cheval Blanc ( three Bordeaux ) + Chateau Petrus ( Bordeaux pomerol ) + Romanée conti ( Bourgogne ) + Some very high flight Côtes du Rhône

You said the best ? and most expensive ? - now you have them - for the prices, take a chair and Google on the basis of each name -

  5. Try Grange, Opus One, Georges La Tour Beauleiu Select,

Petrus, Barolo, and for dessert Chateau Y'Quem Sauternes

  6. Well, expensive is very relative and if you don't really know what is quality you are dumb to go expensive.  The most expensive are for collecting and not drinking.  As far as varieties I like a French Pinot Noir or a Aussie Shiraz.  If you want a good direction take a wine class with a friend.  Really fun, and if you take a cab you don't have to spit!
