  1. By "biogas" I mean methane generated and collected from the anaerobic decomposition or digestion of organic matter, typically waste.

In the US, people generate biogas from two major sources:  1) digestion of sewage sludge and 2) collection of gas generated in landfills.

    (1) Sewage treatment plants produce sludge from both primary and secondary treatment of sewage.  At many treatment plants, this sludge is treated, dewatered and incinerated,  disposed of in landfills.  At some plants, sludge is routed to digesters and biogas is generated, which is often used to heat the digester to optimum temperature for digestion.  Digested sludge (reduced in volume from the undigested input) may be disposed of on land as "biosolids" or treated, dewatered, and then incinerated or land-disposed.

(1a) Dairy farmers or other livestock operators may also operate digesters to dispose of manure and generate biogas.

    (2)  Solid waste disposal landfills may include off-gas collection systems that bring biogas to central processing.  Most landsfills don't make this investment, and most of the off-gas simply goes to the atmosphere.  Use of the biogas requires that it be treated to remove corrosive sulfur compounds like H2S and generally upgrade the gas quality.  Then, if the landfill is near a gas pipeline, it may get put into the gas stream.

Biogas generation and use in the US is more on an industrial scale than in other countries around the world.
