  1. My husband and I just started the adoption process.  You need to decide if you want to adopt a newborn or an older child.  Domestically, internationally or through the foster care system.  Then you will want to research the agencies in your area.

Attend information meetings and ask questions.  Once you decide which agency you want to use, they will be able to help you see where you would qualify.

  2. I imagine each state has its own procedures for qualifying for adoption.  In our state there has to be a thorough home study, fingerprinting, background check, etc...

However, what I would like to say is that there is a lot more to "preparing" to adopt than going through the legal stuff.  Please do yourself and the child you may adopt a HUGE favor, and learn everything you can first about adoptees, adoption issues in chidlren and adults, just everything in the world that you can learn before deciding to adopt.  It is a complicated thing, and not something to undertake lightly.  Get the facts ahead of time, and if you are willing to commit to the kind of parenting that adopted children need, then you should go for it.  Just know ahead of time that adopted children will have adoption issues.  It just comes with the territory.  No matter how much you love them, and how much they love you, they still feel adopted, and it still matters to them.  That's not bad.  It's just something you should know ahead of time.
