I received a class C misdemeanor for public intoxication about 2 1/2 years ago. It was an immature moment in my life that I will always regret. I now want to apply to become a substitute teacher and I am going to school to eventually become a teacher. Will this affect my ability to get a substitute job and eventually a teaching position?

  1. probably.

you wont be ruled out... but they will know about it - and they are the ones interviewing you for the job - you'll need to do some splainin'

If you were a hiring board and had access to many candidates would you take a chance on someone who did this only 2.5 years ago? sorry - but thats the reality.

  2. This shouldn't be a big deal at all! I have a clean record, but I do know that there are others that teach with me who do not! To become a teacher in Alabama, you will have to take a drug test and be fingerprinted. I am not sure for other states! Call the school Board of Ed. you want to sub for and ask. Good luck!

  3. Being drunk probably will not hurt you.  However, if you have a DUI, or disorderly on your record, that might raise an eyebrow.

Most states require fingerprints now so nothing is sacred.

Good luck and welcome to the profession!
