I want to go to the army so I can pay for medical school. I'm a woman so does that mean I have to sign up for MediCorp or the Nurse Corps? What exactly do you do and do I have to go to a premed program before? Any help with the process of becoming a combat medic and what happens after would be GREATLY appreciated.

  1. You will likely want to check out the 68W MOS. It is the medical specialist. If you graduate the course you will be a registered EMT-Basic.

Job duties vary. Many are out in the field units. For me, I was a medic on board an Army boat - providing medical care to 40 folks while at sea. In most places, you act as the first medical treatment a wounded soldier will receive. You may also end up working in a military hospital. I lucked out and worked in the ER as a medic which was great experience.

As far as Premed is concerned - You can attend on your own time depending on where you are stationed. The Army is not going to give you 4 years of paid school to complete an undergraduate degree though. Once you have the undergrad degree you have a much better chance of the military giving you time and money for Medical School - but not before.

You are of course free to choose from just about any job that the military offers. The only positions not open to females is combat arms.  The benefit of going to in as a medic is that you will have the chance to gain valuable hands-on experience.
