I recently graduated from AIT for the U.S. Army and I want to become a firefighter. I wanted to know if there are any exceptions for military as far as classes, exam and physical test go. I took the asvab and i would think the fire exam would be similar. If somebody can assist with this question i would appreciate it.

  1. You'll have to go through the testing process just like everybody else.  If you have a dd214 you will be given veteran's preference points -- which is huge in the highly competitive testing for the fire department.

Each department is slightly different on exactly how/when your veteran's points are awarded and how testing is done.

With a military background fire department testing should not be surprising or difficult for you.

  2. You only get a five point veterans preference.  That is all.  Just because you are in the military you receive no special treatment.
